Abstract Neopatrimonialism is a conceptual framework frequently used to analyse state politics. This paper reviews objectivist and positivist literature ascertain the relevance of neopatrimonialism in analysing African It defines following Weberian model, as coexistence legal-rational domination patrimonial over state. The through evolution since colonisation. uses Varieties Democracy (V-Dem) dataset assess prevalence across world within Africa. assesses two propositions conclude that there can be “developmental neopatrimonialism” if its practices are regulated but that, inversely, “predatory hinders development. Additionally, detrimental effect on democracy ambiguous democratisation promote or hinder neopatrimonialism. concludes useful research concept it specific able account for diversity practices.
